Present Company Members

Fernando Marin - Soloist

  • Fernando Marin joined the Linda Vargas Flamenco Dance Companyin Durban in 1998.
  • He has danced in numerous productions touring to the Grahamstown Festival, Theatre on the Square, Playhouse Theatre, Catalina Theatre and Kwasuka Theatre.
  • Fernando is a qualified teacher with Alianza Flamenca (2003).  
  • Fernando moved to Cape Town in 2004 where he began studying with Juana Vargas.
  • In 2008, he is a founder soloist with the formation of a Flamenco company, Flamenco del Sur with Juana Vargas.
  • Fernando has studied in Spain and locally under Flamenco teachers like Manolo Marin, Imma Ortega, La Tati, Angelita Gomez, and many others.
La Celestina

  • La Celestina performed with Jose Montoya Spanish Dance Company Pretoria (1966 – 1972) at the Pretoria State Theatre.
  • She toured to Swaziland and did shows on Operation Areas eg. Rooikop Airbase – Walvis Bay, Grootfontein Military Camp for troops, Rundu-Ondangwa-Oshavango-Ruakana.
  • She performed with Mavis Becker Company in a show directed by Rafael Aguilar of Madrid at Stellenbosch Farmers Winery.
  • She performed in Vibraciones De Espana directed by Margarita Moran and Carlos Vernardo (1981) Port Elizabeth.
  • She performed with Paco  De Lucia Spanish Dancing Ballet Company (1982) Company member in Spain.
  • She performed in Spain at El Relicario in Lloret de Mar and the Costa Del Sol.
  • She did contract work in the Far East – Thailand, Phillipines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
  • She performed with El Templao Group (1995–2002) – Tribute to the Gypsy Kings at the Baxter Theatre and cabaret work at various restaurants.
  • She performed with Fernando Raya Torres  Group - cabaret work.
  •  She joined Juana Vargas in 2007 and became part of Flamenco del Sur.
Michaela Luz

  • Michaela has studied with Marilyn Sher and Carolina Rosa, performing in La Rosa Spanish Dance Theatre for 10 years.
  • She branched out into studying Indian Folk Dance and Khatak.
  • In 2007, Michaela returned with a vital energy and renewed passion for Flamenco resuming her studies with Juana Vargas.
Lupe Brava

  • She has studied Ballet from a young age.
  • In 2007 she qualified as a ballet teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance.
  • She opened her own studio in Fish Hoek in 2007.
  • She has performed at the Masque Theatre, Baxter Theatre and the Artscape in different productions.
  • Flamenco is a recent addition to her dance career and she started studying with Juana Vargas in 2004. She is currently furthering her training through the Alianza Flamenca Syllabus.
Isabel Reyes

  • Isabel started studying Flamenco in 1999.
  • She danced with Briggitte Kade in Bloemfontein.
  • She then moved to Cape Town in 2004.
  • She started with Juana Vargas in 2004, continuing her studies in the Alianza Flamenca Syllabus. She is currently working on the last two levels.
  • Isabel has studied with Immaculada Ortega in 2007.
La Quena

  • She started ballet from a young age and joined the Wilvan School of Dance in the early 1980’s where she expanded her dance training to include Spanish Dancing under the tuition of Veronica Willliams.
  • She has performed extensively with the Wilvan School of Dance and also performed in productions including Jose Antonio Ruiz, Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodriguez. She has also performed with Mavis Becker and the La Rosa Company in various productions over the years.
  • She has made numerous sabbatical trips to Spain, Jerez being her “home away from home” to further her study of Flamenco.
  • She has studied with Maria Del Mar Moreno; Angelita Gomez; La Chiqui; Javier Latorre; Adrián Galiá, Andres Peña, Fernando Galán, La Tati, Angel Muñoz, Domingo Ortega, Rosana Maya and Carlos Bain.
  • La Quena keeps her passion for flamenco alive by returning to study in Spain as often as she can.
Alba Galván

  • Alba’s love of ballet and later Spanish was inspired by her mother, June Campbell who taught both disciplines.
  • Later she joined Danza Lorca under the direction of Mavis Becker where she has performed in various productions inspired by Jose Antonio and Javier Cruz at the Oude Libertas and Nico Malan Theatres.
  • She toured with Danza Lorca to Austria and has made sabbatical trips to Spain to further her dance studies.
  • In 1997 she joined the La Rosa Spanish Dance Company performing with the company at the Oude Libertas.
  • She has explored other dance styles at the Daphne Jubber Modern and Hip Hop Studio.
  • In 2009 she joined Juana Vargas and has been deepening her flamenco understanding through the Alianza Flamenca syllabus training.
